Amaterasu can be a hot-headed goddess, quick to anger, and yet she is also very caring. She cares for her siblings and those who worship her, so much so she has had to find careful ways to interact with her favourite miko (shrine maiden). Amaterasu tries to oversee the other gods, and takes responsibility for those who mean to harm humans. Let’s find out more.
Name: Amaterasu
Name with honorifics: Amaterasu Ōmikami (天照大御神)
Kanji and kana: 天照 - あまてらす [am-a-te-rah-soo]
Deity of: The sun.
Inspirations: Amaterasu was the first Japanese god I learnt about, and no wonder, when she is one of the most important. I knew I wanted to add her in somewhere, but also wanted other lesser known gods to be shown first. She interacts with her brothers a lot in tales, so I thought it would be the best way to bring her in.
First seen in: Faith in a God, which will be up on Ream for February, and Substack for March.
What I like about her: She has a deep rooted power which we haven’t yet seen, and she has a lot of faith in her main priest and miko.
What is fun or hard about writing her: Keeping the balance of her power. I don’t want her to dominate the scenes she is in, but I want to show that she’s above the other gods too.
Typical place to find her: In a garden, surrounded by blooming plants.
